What documents are required to change the guardian in a minor account?

The table below explains the documents required to change the guardian in a minor account:

PAN
  • A copy of the minor’s PAN attested by the new guardian.
  • A self-attested copy of the new guardian’s PAN.
Date Of Birth (DOB) proof
  • A copy of the proof of DOB of the minor. It can be any of the following:
    • Birth certificate
    • School leaving certificate
    • Passport
    • Mark sheet issued by a higher secondary board.
Passport-size photograph
  • Passport-size photographs of the minor.
  • Passport-size photographs of the new guardian.
Bank proof
  • A copy of the minor’s bank account. It can be any of the following:
    • Cancelled cheque
    • Recent month's bank statement or passbook.
Legal guardian letter
  • A copy of the legal guardian letter if the new guardian is not the minor's parent.
Address proof
  • A copy of the minor’s address proof attested by the new guardian.  It can be any of the following:
  • A copy of the new guardian’s address proof.  It can be any of the following:
Death certificate
  • If the existing guardian has passed away, submit notarised copy of the death certificate or a copy attested by a gazetted officer.
Court order
  • If the guardian is being changed due to a court order, submit a notarised copy of the court order or a copy attested by a gazetted officer.

In-Person Verification (IPV)

In-Person Verification (IPV) is a mandatory process for all brokers to ensure that the person submitting the documents is the same as the individual opening the account. Both the new guardian and the minor need to complete this process.

To complete the IPV online, follow these steps:

  1. Visit signup.zerodha.com/ipv.
  2. Enter the mobile number and click on Continue.
  3. Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to the mobile number and click on Continue.
  4. A 4-digit OTP will be generated and displayed on the screen.

  6. Show the OTP while ensuring that you and the minor are clearly visible in the camera.
  7. Click on Capture and then on Save IPV.


Once the documents are ready, email the soft copies of the forms to [email protected]. The documents will be reviewed for any corrections. After the review, courier the hard copies to the following address:

It can take up to 72 working hours to change the guardian in the minor account.
