What are the charges for investing in NPS using Coin?
The charges for investing in NPS using Coin are:
- Account opening fee: NPS account opening charge of ₹200, plus 18% GST.
- Commission on the contribution amount: A commission of 0.25% of the contribution amount or ₹30 whichever is higher, plus 18% GST. The maximum commission fee for NPS contributions is capped at ₹25,000.
Example scenario
-
- An investment of ₹1,000 is made.
- An account opening of ₹236[₹200 + ₹36 (18% GST)] is charged.
- Commission of 0.25% on ₹1,000 = ₹2.5. But ₹30 + ₹5.4 (18% GST) will be charged as a commission since that is higher.
- Total charges = ₹271.4 (₹236 + ₹35.4).
- Charges when exiting or withdrawing: A commission of 0.125%, + 18% GST when exiting or withdrawing from NPS. The maximum charge is ₹500.
- Non-financial transaction charges: A charge of ₹30, + 18% GST, is applicable when a subscriber modifies their name, address, nominee, bank details etc.
- Persistency fees: Persistency fees are a slab-wise annual charge that applies to subscribers who have been with Zerodha for more than six months in a financial year. The fee is proportionally deducted from each category based on the investor’s allocation. The table below explains the different slabs:
Slab (annual contribution) | Persistency fee |
₹1,000 - ₹2,999
|
₹50 |
₹3,000 - ₹6,000 | ₹75 |
Above ₹6,000 | ₹100 |
Example scenario
An investor has ₹10,000 distributed across three NPS categories (equity, corporate bonds, government bonds) in the following way:
Types | Units | Average Nav | Invested amount | Current Nav | Allocation % |
Equity | 77.78 | ₹90 | ₹7,000 | 101 | 70 |
Corporate bonds | 22.99 | ₹87 | ₹2,000 | 93.5 | 20 |
Government bonds | 23.81 | ₹42 | ₹1,000 | 47.2 | 10 |
Total | - | - | ₹10,000 | - | 100 |
As per the slab rates, since the investment is above ₹6,000 a persistency fee of ₹100 + 18% GST is applicable. The below table shows how the persistency fee of ₹118 ( ₹100 + GST ₹18) is split according to the allocation percentages:
Category | Allocation % | Fee portion | GST portion | Total fee |
Equity | 70 | ₹70 | ₹12.60 | ₹82.60 |
Corporate | 20 | ₹20 | ₹3.60 | ₹23.60 |
Government bonds | 10 | ₹10 | ₹1.80 | ₹11.80 |
Total | 100 | ₹100 | ₹18.00 | ₹118.00 |
The below table shows the number of units that would be debited from each category:
Category | Total fee | Current Nav | Units debited |
Equity | ₹82.60 | 101 | 82.6 ÷ 101 ≈ 0.818 units |
Corporate | ₹23.60 | 93.5 | 23.6 ÷ 93.5 ≈ 0.252 units |
Government bonds | ₹11.80 | 47.2 | 11.8 ÷ 47.2 ≈ 0.250 units |
Total | ₹118.00 | - | - |

100 |
Trail commission of 0.20% of ₹3,000 is ₹6 + 18% GST = ₹7.07 will be charged as a commission since that is higher. The table below shows how the trail commission is split according to the allocation percentages and the number of units that would be debited from each category:
Types | Allocation % | Fee portion | GST portion | Total fee | Current NAV | Units debited |
Equity | 25 | ₹1.5 | ₹0.27 | ₹1.77 | ₹14.69 | 1.77 ÷ 14.69 ≈ 0.120 units |
Corporate bonds | 45 | ₹2.7 | ₹0.486 | ₹3.186 | ₹11.96 | 3.186÷ 11.96 ≈ 0.266 units |
Government bonds | 30 | ₹1.8 | ₹0.324 | ₹2.124 | ₹12.31 | 2.124 ÷ 12.31 ≈ 0.172 units |
