Why am I getting an invalid TOTP error?

Setting up a Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) is a one-time task that adds additional security to your Kite account. Here is how you can set up Google Authenticator or other time-based apps for Kite two-factor authentication (2FA) using your mobile.

There are two reasons why you could be getting an “Invalid TOTP” error on Kite. To avoid this issue it is recommended to follow the steps in the same order as mentioned below -

1) The clock on your device is out of sync:

The TOTP authentication may fail if the clock on your device is not in sync with the current time. You can correct the time on the clock by selecting the use network-provided time’ option in your device settings. If your PC or mobile time is already in sync, resync again. The process is explained below.

On your personal computer, set the system clock as shown in the below screenshot.

You can set the time on the clock on a mobile device, as shown in the below screenshot.

2) If TOTP has been disabled:

If you had previously disabled the TOTP and you’re currently trying to enable the TOTP, you will get the “Invalid TOTP” error. You will have to re-do the steps in this article to scan the QR code on your app. Ensure that you scan the QR code again only after your device is in sync with the current time as explained above.

Once this is done, your TOTP will be re-enabled.
