What is Power of Attorney (POA)?

A POA is a document that allows a broker to debit shares from the demat account and deliver them to the exchange. Zerodha is no longer collecting POA from clients, as it has been replaced by Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction (PDF) from 19th November 2022. Nothing changes for the clients who have already submitted a POA. To learn more, see What is Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction (DDPI)?

Clients who have opened accounts online can use the CDSL TPIN to authorise the debit of securities. To learn more, see How to generate the CDSL TPIN required to authorise the CNC sell transactions?

However, if clients wish to activate DDPI, they can download the DDPI (DDPI) and courier it to the following address:

153/154, 4th Cross, J.P Nagar 4th Phase,
Opp. Clarence Public School,
Bengaluru - 560078

Ensure that the signature and address mentioned on DDPI match the previously uploaded signature and the address mentioned while opening the Zerodha account. The uploaded signature can be found by visiting, selecting Signature proof in the drop-down menu, and clicking on E-mail to me. The address mentioned in the Zerodha account can be checked on the CMR copy. To know how to get the CMR copy, see What is a CMR copy and where can I get it?

The DDPI will be activated within 72 hours of receiving it, and a confirmation email will be sent once it is processed.

Shares can be sold by authorising the holdings using CDSL TPIN if a POA or DDPI is not submitted. To know how to authorise the holdings, see What is the CDSL TPIN and how to use it to sell the stock holdings?
