FAQs on NRE debit balance

Why is the NRE account in a debit balance and how can it be checked?

A debit (negative) balance may appear due to charges such as Account Maintenance Charges (AMC), Depository Participant (DP) charges, and Smallcase fees. The bank does not settle these charges through the Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) account. Zerodha posts these charges on your funds statement.

Why are charges such as AMC and DP charges not settled from PIS accounts like trades?

Funds in the PIS account cannot be used for Account Maintenance Charges (AMC) and Depository Participant (DP) charges as these are outside the purview of the PIS regulations.

Why is a significant debit balance appearing in the account?

If a buy trade was not settled because there wasn't enough balance in the PIS account or the bank account is frozen, your Zerodha account may show a debit balance equal to the trade value until it is settled. In such cases, Zerodha sends an email asking you to take the necessary action.

How can the debit balance be cleared?

The debit balance can be cleared by transferring funds from your registered NRE savings bank account to Zerodha via NEFT or IMPS. Use the following account details for the transfer:

  • Bank Name: HDFC Bank
  • Account Number: 57500000302010
  • Account Type: Current Account
  • Bank Branch: Richmond Road, Bangalore
  • IFSC Code: HDFC0000523

How can payment confirmation be checked?

Once the funds have been transferred, they will be updated on the funds statement within 48 hours.

Can funds be transferred to the above Zerodha bank account for trading?

No, funds for trading must be maintained in the PIS account. The account details provided above are only for clearing debit balances.

Can funds be transferred from the PIS account?

No, funds can only be transferred from the NRE savings bank account linked to Zerodha.

Can NRO-PIS account dues be paid from the NRE account?

No, NRO-PIS (Non-Resident Ordinary) account dues must be paid separately from the NRO savings account linked to Zerodha. NRE and NRO accounts have different regulations and cannot be used interchangeably.
