Why are weekly expiries no longer available for certain F&O contracts?
According to a recent SEBI circular (WEB), effective from November 20, 2024, stock exchanges in India (both NSE and BSE) will be allowed to offer weekly expiry F&O contracts for only one benchmark index per exchange. Here’s what the new structure will look like:
- NSE: Weekly expiries will only be available for the Nifty 50 index. Weekly expiries for Bank Nifty, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Midcap Select will be discontinued.
- BSE: Weekly expiries will only be available for the Sensex index. Weekly expiries for BANKEX and Sensex 50 will be discontinued.
Here’s the new expiration schedule for index F&O contracts:
Index | Symbol | Weekly expiry | Monthly expiry |
Nifty 50 | NIFTY | Thursday of every week | Last Thursday of each month |
Sensex | SENSEX | Friday of every week | Last Friday of each month |
Nifty Bank | BANKNIFTY | No weekly expiry | Last Wednesday of each month |
