Why are weekly expiries no longer available for certain F&O contracts?

According to a recent SEBI circular (WEB), effective from November 20, 2024, stock exchanges in India (both NSE and BSE) will be allowed to offer weekly expiry F&O contracts for only one benchmark index per exchange. Here’s what the new structure will look like:

  • NSE: Weekly expiries will only be available for the Nifty 50 index. Weekly expiries for Bank Nifty, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Midcap Select will be discontinued.
  • BSE: Weekly expiries will only be available for the Sensex index. Weekly expiries for BANKEX and Sensex 50 will be discontinued.
