What are Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) and how to invest in them?

A Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) is a SEBI-regulated vehicle that blends the characteristics of mutual funds and Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), designed for high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and experienced investors with a minimum investment of ₹10 lakh. SIFs bridge the gap between traditional mutual funds and more exclusive products like Portfolio Management Services (PMS) and AIFs, giving fund managers greater flexibility to use a wider range of market strategies within SEBI's regulatory framework.

SEBI introduced SIFs in late 2024, formally released the regulatory framework for SIFs in February 2025, and made it effective from April 2025, enabling AMCs to launch India's first SIF offerings.

How to invest in SIFs on Coin

You can invest in SIFs directly through the Coin app or Coin web. Coin currently offers SIF investments in open-ended Growth Schemes. Upcoming open-ended SIF NFOs will also be available on Coin during the NFO period.

AMC SIP: The minimum SIP instalment is ₹10 lakh. AMC SIPs below ₹10 lakh are not permitted.

Coin SIP:

  1. Complete a lumpsum initial investment of ₹10 lakh in the SIF scheme and receive unit allotment.
  2. Once your initial investment is allotted, you can set up a Coin SIP at lower instalment amounts.
  3. The minimum additional purchase amount is determined by the respective AMC and may vary across schemes.

SIF structures

SIFs are available in two structures:

  • Interval SIFs: Mandatorily listed on stock exchanges. You can buy or redeem units only during predefined intervals set by the fund house, typically twice a week. The fund house announces the specific days in the Scheme Information Document (SID) during the New Fund Offer (NFO) period.
  • Open-ended SIFs: Not required to be listed on exchanges. You can directly purchase or redeem units through the fund house on an ongoing basis, similar to regular mutual funds.

Redemption conditions and unit freezing

If your investment value falls below ₹10 lakh due to partial redemptions, SEBI requires your remaining units to be frozen. Once frozen, you cannot redeem, transfer, or switch your units until the value is restored.

You have 30 days to make an additional investment in the same scheme and bring your value back to at least ₹10 lakh. If you do not restore the value within 30 days, the AMC will automatically redeem all your remaining units and transfer the proceeds to your registered bank account.

This condition applies to non-accredited investors only.
