When one of the joint account holders passes away, the surviving holders shall succeed in the holdings and funds standing to the credit of such an account. The following documents must be submitted to notify and claim the shares:
- Notifier form (PDF).
- Transmission request form of joint account (PDF).

Hard copy of the
Client Master Report (CMR)
of the surviving account holder/s with DP seal and signature, or a soft copy of the digitally signed CMR. A CMR is not required if the surviving account holder/s has an account with Zerodha.

Death certificate of the deceased holder (original/ notarised/ with a verifiable QR code).

PAN of the surviving account holder/s (self-attested).

Example scenario

A joint account is held with three account holders,
where

is the primary account holder,
B
is the second,
and
C
is the third.
If
B
passes away, the holdings in the joint account can be transferred to a joint account
where
A
is the primary account holder,
and
C
is the second holder.
- A joint account is held, where A is the primary account holder, and B is the second. If B passes away, the holdings in the joint account can be transferred to an account where A is the primary and single account holder and not to any other joint account of A .
Things to keep in mind:
- There are no charges for the transmission process.
- Once Zerodha receives the valid documents, the transmission process will be completed within 21 working days.
- Lock-in shares and SGBs will only be moved to the surviving holder(s) CDSL demat accounts.
- The surviving holder/s can transmit securities to an account opened in their names only, and the sequence of primary and secondary holders must match in both accounts.
- Zerodha fetches the KYC of the clients as per SEBI's requirements.
