How to unfreeze a demat account frozen due to an inactive mobile number?

If your mobile number appears on TRAI's (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) list of inactive or disconnected numbers, Zerodha freezes your demat account to prevent unauthorised access. You can unfreeze your account by updating your mobile number through Console.

Zerodha freezes accounts in these cases because deactivated numbers are eventually reassigned to new users, potentially exposing your holdings. SEBI also requires all demat accounts to have an active mobile number so that OTPs and trade alerts reach only you.

When your account is frozen, you cannot sell stocks or make off-market transfers, and you stop receiving SMS alerts for stock credits.

How to unfreeze your account

  1. Visit console.zerodha.com/account and click on the edit icon next to your mobile number.
  2. Enter your new number and verify via OTP.
  3. Complete the IPV and eSign verification.

Your account automatically unfreezes once Zerodha updates its records, which typically takes 24 to 48 hours.

If your number is currently active and you are receiving all communications from Zerodha, you can ignore any email you may have received about this.
