Why is the name on the Zerodha account different from the submitted documents, and how can it be corrected?

The name on the Zerodha account is fetched from the Income Tax Department (ITD) and not from the documents submitted to open an account because of which the name may differ between the Zerodha account and the documents submitted. To update the name on the account as per the submitted documents, clients must first update the name on the ITD. After the name is updated on the ITD, certain documents must be couriered to Zerodha. The signature on these documents must match the signature provided while opening an account. The documents that must be couriered are:

  • Account modification form and KYC (PDF).
  • Annexure B (PDF).
  • A self-attested copy of the PAN and address proof. If an Aadhaar is being submitted as proof, ensure a masked Aadhaar is submitted. To learn how to get the masked Aadhaar, see How to download masked Aadhaar?
  • If the name has changed due to marriage or divorce: Any of the following:
    • A notarised copy of the marriage certificate or divorce certificate is required.
    • Copy of passport showing husband’s or father’s name.
    • An original notarised copy of the publication of the name change in the official gazette. Sample copy (PDF). The old or existing name on the gazette must match the name on the PAN submitted while opening an account with Zerodha.
    • An original newspaper publication or a photocopy that is notarised.
  • If the name has changed for any reason other than marriage:
    • An original notarised copy of the publication of the name change in the official gazette. Sample copy (PDF). The old or existing name on the gazette must match the name on the PAN submitted while opening an account with Zerodha.
    • An original newspaper publication or a photocopy that is notarised.

Once the forms are received, the name will be updated within 72 working hours. An account modification charge of ₹25 + GST is applicable for the name change.

To change the father or mother's name in the account, courier the account modification form (PDF), copy of the PAN, and proof of address to the above address.
